Coboat has been an amazing journey and has always pushed the boundaries of technology and innovation. It is incredible how far we have come in just over six months since Tommy, James and Karsten dreamt up the idea sitting on a beach in Thailand.

We are a true start-up in the sense that every day the project becomes more challenging and this tests our adaptability. But we always rise to that challenge and find ways to do what needs to be done to move forward in order to make this project a reality.

It has been a truly passionate adventure, with each one of us giving our best to make it happen.

Having said this, we must admit that we have been a bit over optimistic about what we could achieve by the launch date that we had set for ourselves: November 28th.

Over the past few weeks we have learned that whilst some things can happen almost by magic, others take longer than planned. This is the way of the startup world especially when it comes to construction – as many of you probably have experienced yourselves. Our parts and equipment are coming from all over the world, the workers on the shipyard have experienced many unexpected challenges, such as the heavy rain in the last weeks, plus we already had a late start with the delivery from the Maldives in August. Alas, we are still moving strong and at a good pace regardless of the setbacks.

Our team in Phuket is working really hard but we are just watching our buffer melting away in the beginning of the high season. Right now it looks like we will not be ready in time to launch on November 28 as we had hoped. Which is a real shame but we feel that the boat should be ready to rock and roll and be as perfect as we can get it before launch date. There should be no compromises.

When will we be ready and how much will we be delayed? We will be better able to make an estimate in the middle of November. It could just be 1 or 2 weeks but to be on the safe side we are planning to move forward our schedule for 4 weeks.

This is as disappointing for our guests as it is for us. But we are confident that our community will understand and react in a positive way that supports our unique idea and venture. We’ve come this far together, after all!

We will soon reach out to our guests, scheduled for those first weeks, to find individual solutions for their bookings.
Nonetheless we are proud of the project, where we are today and want to thank our team and our supporters from all over the globe for your patience and trust in this really exciting and sometimes challenging project.

IMG_0292So now I am part of the Coboat crew. As co-founder. If I had known what I have gotten myself into I would not have done it in the first place. How many times have I said this before? Seems I have not been learning much from my experiences. Although I have quite some experience from starting and running a PR agency for 25 years, starting a social cause “Freunde fürs Leben” (suicide awareness campaign) 14 years ago and being partner and shareholder in a variety of companies and start-ups for more than 15 years.

Has it just been three months ago that I got on board of the Coboat team? Karsten told me about the idea in April when I reached out to him inquiring about a yacht charter in Sicily. But it was in May when the two of us met in Berlin, went to DNX conference and I had my first Skype call with Tommy and James who finally officially welcomed me as a partner. Later I learned that the Coboat idea had only been born on a beach in Koh Lanta two months before in March.

Much has happened in those three months …

I started working full time again.

Four years ago I quitted my desk job in the agency I had founded and have been transforming myself in business angel, photographer, traveller, sailor and digital nomad. You might as well call it semi-retired if you want. Suddenly I find myself working 10+ hours a day, 7 days per week. And I am enjoying every minute.

I became a yacht owner.

Together with Karsten I have bought an 82 feet catamaran which I haven’t seen so far in real life. And to be honest I have never seen a boat that size. 11745381_10205357049060486_5307885754010237585_nBut the flag registry from Vanuatu shows me as the owner of half of it. If you had told me four years ago when I started taking my first sailing course I would have called you a liar. Also I am a shareholder of a company in London and another one in Belize which we founded in the meantime (and will become the owner of the yacht in the end).

I find myself planning a route around the world and learning about high risk areas.

It’s great fun moving post-it stickers on a calendar saying “Maldives”, “Caribbean”, “Venice” and “Phuket”. We have been doing that for a few days in Berlin and I cannot get enough of it. If only my sailing instructor knew …

That was we we learned that the insurance refuses to cover our trip when we go past Somalia and through the Gulf of Aden. It’s called “High Risk Area” and we thought we can get through by traveling with a flotilla (accompanied by warships) before we learned that we cannot keep up with their speed of around 16-18 knots. So what are our options? (a) Hire armed guards and protect the boat with barbwire. (b) Go around Africa which would set us back 6-12 months. (c) Hop on a yacht carrier which would set us back 50.000$.

So far after having gone live 6 weeks ago we have

This is an amazing ride with so much positive energy and feedback. I cannot wait to get on board with our community. Let the journey begin!

Ahoy,
I’m Joachim, a half Norwegian — half Swedish speaking Finn. Right now my scope is to make Coboat the most epic adventure out there.
No doubt I’ll need help from other digital nomads who know where to go treasure hunting around the world, both at sea and ashore. Check out our planned route and let me know your little secret spots and activities along the way, I promise to share them. Actually, I’d prefer you joining Coboat and show me in person.
Some months ago I felt how my viking gene kicked in and ever since I’ve listened to the universe telling me to ditch the coffee shops and incubators, but instead hunt for real “treasures”. So I found Coboat while doing my digital nomad thing on a different boat adventure in the Baltic Sea region over the last couple of weeks.
Tommy, the designer and a long lost friend, started posting these insanely intriguing looking posts about this Coboat philosophy “Blue sea thinking”. Yep thats me, I thought and here I am.

Instantly I made a short video of my voyage as an introduction of myself, with only my phone as a tool due to scarcity of electricity. I thought “Tesla, help me now or I’ll never get aboard Coboat”. Having only ever used professional editing tools on a computer, I was amazed at what you could produce using only your phone and the right app.

Getting to know the team remotely is exciting and I just threw myself in and had a go, trying to make myself useful. We haven’t really met in person yet but they invited me to Berlin to join the DNX — Digital Nomad Conference, maybe I’ll meet you there as well?

My intuition says we need you on-board. So get in touch and let’s do this. I need to share some crazy ideas, so now would be perfect time to say “Hi”.
Over and out.

I’m both happy and proud to write this first blog post on the Coboat site! My name is Tommy, I am taking care of the website design and also a co-founder of Coboat.

It’s been a great ride so far and I feel very positive and motivated by the project, the team and partners, everybody has been very helpful and we’ve got great feedback as well.

It’s quite ironic that I’m sitting inside a small shed about 16m2, 20m from the sea, on the west coast of Finland doing this, technology is just awesome! Almost offgrid with the sauna and sea as my daily “shower”. It’s been quite cold and rainy since I returned home from Thailand one month ago, but I enjoy meeting up with friends and family and the bad weather helps me stay focused on work! =)

I am still working on the design of the Coboat website, working on details, developing new things and researching when I find time left over. And I am more than happy to get feedback from you on Coboat and feel free to contact me or the team anytime!

The Earlybirds vouchers are finally out! So check them out and don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter (in the footer) to stay connected with us!

See you around!

/Tommy

“Coboat“ is a coworking space on a catamaran. In November 2015, “Coboat” will begin its journey in Southeast Asia en route to the Maldives and the Seychelles while passing through the Mediterranean Sea in the coming year.

No Boundaries in Sight: Coworking on the Seven Seas

30 meters long and equipped with a 32 meter high mast, Coboat is true mobile living and working. Coboat features a space of more than 700 square meters, not to mention a trampoline net as big as a volleyball pitch. Launching at the end of the year, Coboat will be the very first coworking space on the water.

“Coboat” is a catamaran with room for up to 20 digital nomads, entrepreneurs, founders and freelancers alike. The vessel offers weekly or monthly booking at around 1,000 Euros per week. The package includes accommodation, catering and an unobstructed 360° view of the sea. It provides a work-life balance like no other place in the world: High-speed internet, a fresh breeze and the “Coboat” community to enable creative and efficient working. Coboaters enrich their experience with diving, photography or simply relaxing in the sun. Numerous other activities such as brewing beer or learning the ABC’s of sailing offer plenty opportunities to relax.

“Coworking spaces are available everywhere, whether in Berlin, Chiang Mai, Barcelona or Bali”, says James Abbott, one of the initiators and operators of “Kohub” in Koh Lanta. “When it comes to mobile living and working, the desire for sunny places increases massively.” It was this desire that led the four Coboat founders to bring coworking to the sea.

#route

“Coboat” begins its journey in Thailand. Starting in November, the catamaran will be in Southeast Asia for at least three months. The tour then heads West en route to the Maldives and the Seychelles. Come spring/summer of 2016, Coboat sails towards the Eastern and Western Mediterranean Sea until it crosses the Atlantic to arrive at the Caribbean at the end of 2016.

#tickets #kickstarter

Starting in June 2015, the first batch of limited early-bird tickets will be offered through coboat.org. 20 spots are available at a time, allowing for approximately 1,000 spots per year. A Kickstarter campaign will start soon after. The campaign will offer supporters additional tickets before they go on regular sale, starting in July.

#quote #24hours

“On a sailboat, you spend 24 hours a day in a collective”, describes initiator Karsten Knoor about his vision, “This is an unusual situation for regular coworking and it’s amplified by the blending with nature and water.”

#quote #dream

The initiators are founders and entrepreneurs by heart; always mobile – always creative. Karsten: “The idea arose in Thailand while working at Kohub, James Abbott’s coworking space. With Coboat, we realise our own dream to experience the world by boat, while being productive, meeting new people and helping them develop their ideas.”

#quote #vision

“If you want to work or realise ideas and concepts in a collective, Coboat brings you together with like-minded people from all over the world to help develop new ideas and business.”, outlines founder Tommy Westlin his vision of Coboat.

#greentech
Coboat is powered by environmentally-friendly, sustainable technology, which includes a state-of-the-art electric motor powered by solar and wind energy.

#notforprofit

Coboat is non-profit venture. Net income will be re-invested into maintaining and further developing the project, as well as charity and aid projects for the areas where the Coboat community stays.
